Water Damage

Water and excess humidity will damage (especially rotting) all natural fibers like wool, cotton and silk.

Water damage is using caused by flooding and the watering of plants. Leaks and permanently damp pots are equally harmful. Make sure to keep plants and their saucers off of your rugs. Using plant stands is another option, but ensure that water never overflows onto the rug.

To help prevent damage from general excess moisture, vacuum and lay your Oriental rugs out in direct summer sunlight for a full day to let them completely dry at least twice a year. Make sure to flip the rugs after about half the day. This short sun exposure will not fade your rugs. Drying rugs in this manner is one of the best things you can do to protect them from rotting and bug infestations.
